Experience

As a dynamic, organised and versatile individual always looking to better himself and others, I believe that I possess the necessary attributes and skills to make a positive contribution to the teaching profession. My yearning to teach is based on personal childhood experience, having being bullied. Yet, teacher Mrs Melanie Henderson restored and developed a resolute confidence which has shaped who I have become. Experiencing the impediments of teaching and learning has inspired me to make a difference to the welfare of children’s lives, and would make me a better teacher as a result. Being a key participant in a child’s development is exciting and rewarding; teaching is my vocation and I am determined to succeed. My career ambition of teaching and tutoring has been further supplemented by comments from those in the teaching profession that my attributes would be positively suited to the profession. The skills that I have developed during my history degree will be of importance in enabling pupils to develop analytical and communication skills as well as an understanding of human values, which will help prepare them for the future. As an aspiring teacher, the most important aspect I could share is my enthusiasm and passion for learning. This can be achieved by bringing lessons to life to engage all students in order to stimulate interest. I would ensure that all pupils have a voice to express and validate judgements, which would enable them to value why and what they are learning. My degree enabled me to strategically develop broad subject knowledge which can be applied to subjects and skills which are relevant to the National Curriculum. I am also prepared to meet the challenge of learning subject areas of which I am not familiar. This demonstrates both an enthusiasm for learning and a commitment to teaching. Development and enhancement of excellent communication and interpersonal skills at university have been demonstrated at local schools. Shadowing and personal mentoring with children who have learning difficulties was rewarding, and is a role I would consider professionally. My experience demonstrated that every child matters and is different, and as a teacher, I must always strive to adapt and meet individual requirements. Group work is also vital to engage young people in their development. Here, I supervised and observed small groups within the classroom where I aided the pupil’s preparation for SAT tests, so that they were able to fulfil their learning objectives. The use of topics such as the World Cup in South Africa engaged students, making learning both interesting and enjoyable which was conducive to a positive learning environment. Despite the challenges, I felt comfortable and at ease in the classroom environment which enhanced my desire to teach. I also have interests in I.C.T. and sport, and would always be willing to devote time to extra-curricular activities, which I demonstrated with initiative and organisation during my experience. Gaining a Criminal Records Bureau disclosure as well as applying for educational webcasting and volunteering in a wide range of schools will enable me to gain further experience, whilst completing a Masters Degree. Having a passion for learning, I am ready for a new type of challenge: developing the skills to help a learner learn and succeed. I appreciate the challenges of teaching and believe that I have the necessary drive, determination and skills to succeed. Teaching is an essential and responsible role in overseeing the transition from youth to adulthood, and is one in which I would make a positive contribution. As Henry Adams said, 'A teacher affects eternity; he can never tell where his influence stops'.
