Experience

As part of the student associates scheme, which I became involved in through my university, I have been given the opportunity to take part in a temporary school placement in order to be fully immersed within the teaching experience. I have fully enjoyed my time spent at Norham and it has reaffirmed my desire to pursue a career in teaching in the future.. As part of the scheme I have prepared comprehension activities for the younger French students, helped with oral pronunciation and sentence structure and acted as a scribe during an English GCSE examination in order to assist a student who suffered from dyslexia. I have also been given the opportunity to assist in the schools SEN department (Special Educational Needs) where I assisted the pupils with their reading scientific and mathematical studies. This year I have spent 10 months working as an English Language Assistant in Sartene, a small village in southern Corsica, an experience which has been both educational and enjoyable. I had the opportunity to prepare exercises for pupils ranging from 11 to 18 years old with varying levels of ability. I have learnt many successful teaching methods and believe that I have developed as a teacher thanks to having the opportunity to work with a very helpful English Department. I have gained a great deal of experience and knowledge of what it entails to be a teacher of a foreign language. I have taught large groups of up to 30 children and also worked with students on a bone to one basis, helping them with their written and spoken English with particular attention focused on their intonation and pronunciation. It has been an invaluable experience.

Hobbies

For the past fifteen years I have been playing classical piano and have achieved grade 5 in musical theory and grade 8 in piano performance. My musical background has taught me the importance of both commitment and determination and allowed me to witness first hand, the benefits of dedicating oneself to a task. Music has injected an enthusiasm into my everyday life and helped me to become a fun loving energetic individual who is not afraid of hard work. I think these are beneficial qualities to possess when working with children as I possess the enthusiasm to inspire. I hope to pursue piano teaching in the future. I also Irish danced for a period of 15 years both as a solo competitor and as part of a team and have completed several performance related examinations. I was also selected to dance in the Scor Na nOg competition, where my team was lucky to make it to the all Ireland final. Through university I became involved in salsa dancing and was elected the social secretary for Newcastle University’s Latin and Ballroom Society in 2009. I have recently been very fortunate to have been offered a place in The Latin Connection Dance team where we are scheduled to perform both regionally and internationally through the course of the year. Through dancing I have realised how much easier a task becomes when you have the support of a dedicated team all reaching for the same goal. In many ways this is no different to working with the public as the same theory applies, it is much easier and enjoyable to see a task through until the end if you have the help of others henceforth reinforcing the importance of team work in everyday life
